What's
up people. In case you hadn't heard, the ‘Cherry is back inside
the building. After a 2-year hiatus Chicago-fave DJ Heather brings
her much sought after imprint back to life via Vancouver-based Nordic
Trax.
First
up, we have the French born London-based producer G iom, aka G uillaume
Jambel, who has knock-out releases & remixes for the likes of
Motion Music, Eight Tracks, Amenti, Kolour, Om, Agave, Tango &
more. As the title suggests the tracks are a few years old and pre-date
his other original material. You may have already received these

Debut for Nordic Trax from rising French star Kirby, dropping his
most accomplished EP to date. With previous releases for Tango,
Chillin, Elevation, Connected, Motion, Kolour & Onethirty, and
remixes for Asad Risvi among others, Kirby is quickly make a name
for himself.
Advance deejay support for this EP has been overwhelming, with rave
reviews and support from the likes of Fish Go Deep [Defected], Marlon
D [Underground Collective, Strictly Rhythm], DJ Harri [Subclub],
Nacho Marco [Freerange, Loudeast], Kaskade [Ultra], Giom [Bobby
& Klein], Inland Knights [Drop], LawnChair Generals, DJ Diz
and Jay Tripwire among many others.
First track and A-side on the vinyl is ‘Nightwriter’,
a dark, brooding, big-room house number with a remarkable breakdown
and tough beats that will do the number on any dancefloor. Lead
by a driving sub bass and spacey chords, this is a techy-but-deep
driver. Believe it.
Next up from Monsieur Kirby is ‘Headmovin’, a funky,
bumpin’ number with a mellow and uplifting vibe that will
work perfectly in small club with a proper deep vibe. A very tightly
mixed groove, when the bassline drops, you’ll be hard-pressed
not to find your head movin’.
Last on the ep, but most certainly not least, is ‘Leaves’.
This one has been receiving widespread support from an eclectic
mix of deejays & tastemakers, ranging from proggy big-room players,

Gavin
Boyce springs back into action with his sophomore effort on NT.
Following the success of his Nordic Trax debut ‘Sometimes It's Me
Ep' [NT054 – released Feb 2008], the young Irish producer is in
fine form on this three-track EP. His previous NT release received
support from the likes of Laurent G arnier, Nacho Marco, Fish G
o Deep, DJ Harri, Mazi & Kaskade among others, and early support
for this one has been just as strong.
Kicking
things off is ‘Antitrust' – a darker, big-room number for fans of
Objektivity, Halo/CityDeep, Tiger Stripes & Danism. Lots of
space in the mix for a looping build that reaches its peak before
a long release & breakdown. Mature sensibilities yet directed
straight at the dancefloor – this is modern
house music.
Next
up G avin delivers another gem with ‘First Movements' – which comes
across on first impressions as a straight deep number. The tune
is driven by a massive kick & lovely hook which takes a most
unexpected turn a third of the way through: evolving into a decidedly
more stripped-back affair. When the second hook drops, it's sheer
joy.
Rounding
things out is ‘Face Down', the genesis for this project which originally
appeared on Luke McKeehan's critically-acclaimed compilation 'Many
Shades Of House Volume 2' [NT057 - released June 2008]. Solid beats
and a deliciously hooky piano-line give this track an old school
vibe for the end-of-the-night crowd. Before you know it the strings
have dropped, and its 1989 all over again. Tune!

If
I happen to meet Fabian Giannattasio (aka DJ Mood and Jazzy Eyewear)
and his glasses are stylish, I'll be disappointed. Which is never
how I feel about his music, and this single is no exception. 'Doing
Wrong' is super spacious, letting the minimal bass and tracky drums
do all the talking.

This Vancouver label’s top tier underground status is
confirmed via two excellent singles: Colorado duo Bassline Road’s
raw dub-funk, and Kelvin K’s gritty, Rhodes-soloing tracks.
Bassline Road (also of Deep House Soldiers fame) employs handclaps,
conga riffs, and electric bass over moody-but-sexy slow and low
4/4 disco rhythms. Moulton vet Kelvin brings that famed SF studio’s
sound to his new Brighton, UK digs on a smooth, propulsive, and
jazzy gem.

Kelvin
was actually born in the UK, brought up in San Francisco and now
lives in Brighton… Here on his debut release for Nordic Trax you
can almost hear his various musical influences spread over 3 lovely
house tracks that are just right for the floor. Deep house grooves,
lovely Rhodes workings, a good solid groove and some vocal back
up that is just enough to set the mood. Another very fine release
from this great label – get looking for it in the shops!

Soldiers) and Jon Nedza (Community Recordings). Three versions for

Drums Mix', ‘Original Mix' and ‘Intro/Outro' – all great, now its

- Kelvin K's '2 Doors Down' is on the top of the downloads chart
at Stompy.com.
The digital distributor of all things deep & funky hosts some
of the latest NT releases, and this one from Kelvin K has been tearing
things up since it dropped 2 weeks back.

NT hosted another successful long-weekend bash this past May 22nd
as we welcomed House heavyweights Mark Farina & DJ Heather back
to Vancouver. The event was in celebration of Mr. Farina's Mushroom
Jazz 5 (Om Records) -- the best yet, if anyone's asking -- with
Heather in support of her new mix for Fabric (Fabric 21). Held at
Vancouver's infamous Commodore Ballroom, the packed event was a
real treat for music lovers & dancers alike as Mark & Heather

Well we made it back from Miami in one piece. Thanks to all who
made The Goods (3rd Annual) a great success. Definitely no thanks
to the Miami 'Sound' Police for shutting down a permitted party
an hour early...but hey, we had fun. I wish I had a picture of the
enforcement lady tapping Pete Moss on the shoulder -- no parking

The music of Jon Delerious recently found
it's way on to one of TV's latest buzz series 'Godivas'. The hourly
show set in the Vancouver restaurant scene featured 'Glow', a selection
from Jon's 2004 Nordic Trax album 'No Warning'. Godivas can be seen
on Bravo in Canada. As well, Jon's recent live set recorded at Bamboo
